When can I apply for Research admissions to SERC ?
The research admission applications are generally due in the month of February and March every year. You need to apply during the period. The last date for applying for the currently academic year is already over. More details of the admission (for the current year) is available at http://www.iisc.ernet.in/admissions

I have not yet received the call letter. On which date will the interview be held at SERC ?
Please note that the interview call letters will be sent by the academic section. You can check your application status, by visiting Admission status, website. Any query related to the interview call letter should be directed to the academic section:
(email: dracad@academic.admin.iisc.ernet.in).

When do I hear my official results ?
The selected candidates will be intimated by the academic section after all interviews (for all candidates) are over and a centralized allocation process is completed. The academic section will inform you (roughly a week after the interview) about the results.
I have received the interview call letter. Where can I get details of the technical interview ?
Details are given in the brochure: SERC_Research_Admissions_Brochure_2010, available at SERC website.

Is there any other interview round after the first, at SERC ? Do I have to come prepared to stay for one week ?
This is to clarify that your interview in SERC will be on the date mentioned in your interview call letter. There will be written and oral components, but both will be scheduled in the same session (morning/afternoon) as indicated in your interview letter. Hence, you do not need to plan for any additional stay.

Is it possible to get accommodation in the campus during the interview ?

Is the Research admission brochure advertised in SERC website giving admission process, relevant only for SE, or, is also applicable for other departments as well ?
The brochure is specific to SERC. You need to check with other departments about their interview process.

In the Research admission brochure, the basic areas to be tested are not explicitly mapped to specific laboratories. It says we can select any two basic areas from the list. But looking at the list, one might implicitly think, that if one selects computer architecture laboratory, they have to select architecture as one of the basic areas, and if they select databases, they have to select database as one of the basic areas, and so on.

I have not yet decided on the exact laboratory (out of - computer architecture, databases, and high performance computing). I would like to do that after I talk with the concerned Professors in these areas.

Out of the basic areas, there are subjects like data structures and discrete mathematics which are general subjects and apply to all laboratories.

So, can I choose basic areas to be tested as
1. data structures
2. discrete mathematics

and then give the laboratory options as
1. Computer architecture
2. Data bases
3. High performance Computing ?

The areas are not tightly linked to the labs. So you can give the areas based on the stream (CS or CP) and not for the specific laboratory. You will primarily be tested in these areas. However, please note that you may be asked a few additional questions depending on your laboratory choices.

Do I need to mail my preference sheet ?
You can fill the preference sheet and give it to us on the day of your interview.
The interview/written test are scheduled individually for all departments. So, if you are applying to other departments, you need to attend their respective written tests/interviews too.
I have applied for Research admissions to SERC, but I do not remember the Application number. How do I find it ?
Please contact the academic section.
I found that the brochure mentions a laboratory known as "Information Systems laboratory" whereas the SERC website contains "Muti-media and Network Security laboratory". Are these two the same, and can we specify this laboratory in the list of preferences ?
Yes, the Multi-media and Network Security Laboratory has been renamed as Information systems laboratory. You can specify Information systems as the laboratory of your choice.
Will GATE score be given weightage in the interview or is it totally based on th e performance in the interview ?
The GATE score has been used for short-listing the candidates for research interview. The performance of the candidate in the written and oral components would play a major role in the selection for research admission.
Do I need to carry my resume also along with the documents mentioned ? Should I carry "Statement of Purpose" or can I explain it to the board, on passing the initial written test ?
Details are given in the brochure: SERC_Research_Admissions_Brochure_2010, available at SERC website.
